About SOPHES Nepal

Creating a platform for professionals to flourish.

Society for Physical Education and Sports (SOPHES), Nepal is a professional non-profit making and apolitical organization. It is established to create a platform to flourish the potentialities of physical education professionals.

SOPHES is registered under the District Administration Office, Kathmandu in 2003 (2060 BS). In practice, the society is popular in the name of SOPHES Nepal.

Our Mission

The mission of SOPHES is to create a common platform for teacher educators of health and physical education, population education and related subjects so as to upgrade teacher education by establishing networks with national, regional and international associations with similar interests.

Why SOPHES Was Established

It was realized from the very beginning to form an organization which looks after the development of physical education and sports. However, the sustainability of such an organization was always questioned in society. This challenge was recognized by the professionals who came together to initiate the organization.

International Inspiration

The Sixth International Society for the History of Physical Education and Sports (ISHPES) seminar in Kanazawa 2002, Japan encouraged the initiation of the organization. Prof. Dr. Hideaki Okubo of Kanazawa University, Japan, was contacted to affiliate the organization with ISHPES. He sent the statute of ISHPES and it was read thoroughly.

Finally, it was concluded that the low income group like ours could not afford to become a member country of ISHPES. Therefore, some like-minded professionals met together to initiate the establishment of an organization of physical education and sports.

Foundation and Registration

After organizing several informal meetings, a formal meeting was conducted on Asar 7th, 2060 BS (June 2003). The meeting finalized to form the Society for Physical Education and Sports (SOPHES), Nepal.

The statute was prepared and SOPHES was registered at the District Administration Office of Kathmandu under the Registration Act 2034(4). After registration, it was also affiliated with the Social Welfare Council.

First General Assembly

The first general assembly and inauguration of SOPHES was held on 7th Kartik, 2060 BS (October 2003).
